Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln, America’s 16^th president, was born in Kentucky in 1809. In 1816, his family moved west to Indiana, where life was extremely difficult.

The Lincoln family were very poor and Abraham worked hard to help his parents, who lived in little pioneer village.

One day, his mother sent him to do some shopping. The shop was very far away and Abe had to walk all the way there. After several hours he finally arrived, did his shopping, and started the long walk home.

On his way back, he suddenly realized that he had a penny too many. “the own of the shop has made a mistake. This penny is his, not mine,” he thought himself.

The young boy went home and gave his mother the shopping, but then he immediately left again and walked all the way back to the shop to return the penny.

And that is why Abraham Lincoln’s face is on the penny and why he is known as “Honest Abe”.
